James Thompson holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in Philosophy from Mr. Jefferson’s University. He is also a Battin Fellow at the International Center of Jefferson Studies at Monticello, where he completed the research for his forthcoming book, Thomas Jefferson’s Early Political Initiatives.

Thomas Jefferson’s sojourn to France was the critical link in the chain of his development into a national political leader. The lectures in this series will tell the story of how the young radical, who wrote the Declaration of Independence in the summer of 1776, transformed into the mature radical, who launched America’s first national political campaign and won “the second American revolution” in the presidential election of 1800. James contends that Thomas Jefferson was inspired to complete this transformation by what he learned during his five-year tenure as Ambassador to France.
